The Open and CFCDA Intramural Teams
Annnddd it’s here, just like that! The 2017 Crossfit Games Open is upon us! First off, let’s get in to what the Open even is for all you newbies. Just watch this video we made from a few years back to get you in the mood…
What is the Open?
The Open is comprised of five workouts over five weeks, and it starts with 17.1. Open workouts are identified by their year and the order in which they appear. The workouts will be released every Thursday at 5pm with a live announcement on the games website involving some of the best Crossfit athletes in the world.
Your score is due by 5pm on Monday and you can do the workout as much during those 5 days as you want(don’t really advise doing it more than once for most members).
What is the purpose of the Open?
The Open is the first qualifying stage of the CrossFit Games. Any athlete who wants to compete at the Games must first make it through the Open in their region. They would then move on to their regionals and the top of the top then moves to the Games.
You may be thinking- “But I’m not that fit.”, “I am not trying to go to the Games”, “I only started Crossfit 2 weeks ago”…etc. This is a chance to be a bigger part of the Crossfit community and have fun with other gyms all around the world. Probably about 75% of people aren’t trying to go on the competition, most are here to just have fun and bond with their gym! It is so fun to watch people push a little past their comfort zone and we see many people get their first pull up, toe 2 bar, muscle up, etc!
Most importantly, the Open will also give you some interesting data on your performance in the gym, which can be a guide for setting realistic goals for the following year.
**We do have a few athletes(you know the ones that look like real superheros with their shirts off?, ya them) that have been working their butts off to try to get to the Regional competition as a team, so be looking for them to slay themselves each week to try and get the best score possible! Hopefully we can all rally and go watch them compete in Portland in June!
When do I do the workout?
Everyone has 5 days to complete the workout, but as a gym we will have it as the workout of the day on Fridays. Make it to any class to get it done. But the real fun will happen at Friday Night Lights.
It will be a fun, lively competition atmosphere complete with BBQ food, cider and beer, awesome music and Ryan Seacrest as the host 😉
Once the workout is announced on Thursday night we will put up heat times on the schedule online for you to sign up for.
**If you can’t make it to a Friday workout we ask that you try to make up the workout in between class times, not during class! It’s your job to find a judge and get it organized. The CFCDA Honey Badger facebook page is a great place to get organized with people. We will also have the gym open on Sundays for an hour or so(time TBD).
Convinced? Head to games.crossfit.com to sign up! Make sure you select Crossfit Coeur d’ Alene as your affiliate AND your team!
The best part about this Open season? INTRAMURAL TEAMS!
Sorry to break your hopes and dreams but not many people have the chance of making it to the Crossfit Games. To get everyone more involved in the spirit of competition and fun we will be having intramural teams within our gym!
I have selected 4 team captains based off their attendance at the gym, their fun personalities and their social media presence. You will get put on a team when I can see your name on the team roster on the games website in no particular order. My goal is just to divide the teams with an even amount of team members and for you guys to get to know new people in the gym!
You can find the teams on the blackboard at the gym. You last chance to sign up for the Open and be added to an Intramural team is Monday the 27th at 5pm.
Each member of your team has a chance to score up to 5 points each week and it is your job to be on the honor system and report to your captain each week how many points you scored!
