This weekend we are proud to bring Erin Karshner to the box for a two-day Olympic lifting seminar. Erin brings an impressive resume to Coeur d’Alene: aside from some HUGE lifts, Erin has spent time as an athlete-in-residence at the Olympic Training Center, competed internationally, and is a Tier 1 Certified Olympic Lifts Coach. This seminar is CrossFit certified, and all attendees will receive an attendance certification from CrossFit HQ. There are still spaces available, at a cost of $595 per seat. We are all students of Oly lifting, and this is a GREAT opportunity to learn from someone who has dedicated a large portion of her life to the perfection of technique- don’t pass it up!
Boot 13 is a wrap! Another solid group of athletes, heading to the WoD group with some brand-new skills. After four weeks of technique, nutritional education (indoctrination?) and mini-WoD’s, everyone is READY! Can’t wait to see everyone in class!
It’s official! CFCd’A and Barlean’s Organic Oils are in cahoots! We have access to the whole product line, in particular, some kick-ass fish oil as well as some great coconut oil. Price sheets are at the gym; fill one out with what you want, we will be putting an order together early next week! Did we mention CFCd’A athletes get 15% off everything they order? Get some!
The spring Paleo Challenge is finished! In the end, we had over 20 athletes participate, and EVERYONE who stuck with the program had positive results. For some people, body composition was a huge focus- many athletes had huge success in that department (none more so that Bret, who dropped a whopping 37 pounds (!) in 6 weeks)- for others, quality of life was the main focus. Across the board, our athletes reported better digestion, sleep, clearer skin, and mental acuity. So, at the risk of sounding like grade school PE teachers, Derek and I truly feel that everyone who committed to the process came out a winner!
Any good challenge has prizes, and this one was no different! We had over $1200 in cash, and the great folks at Barlean’s Organic Oils graciously donated a bunch of high-quality fish and coconut oils to the winners! Winners were chosen by their peers; those that took part in the challenge also picked the winners. Almost everyone who participated got a vote, and, in a generally show of CFCDA class, nobody voted for themselves. In the end, Summer, Michaela, Ryan, and Heather were our top four:

Hey everyone! Check out this great video that Alex and J-Rod put together of their trip to Honduras!

Hey everyone, Christina and Derek of Lucky Monkey brought this to our attention:
Until February 23rd, The Inlander is conducting their annual Best of survey. You can vote by clicking here, or copying the following link to your browser:
http://www.inlander.com/bestof
You’ll have to sign up for an account, and answer a handful of questions. Question #10, on the first page (“Best Health Club”) is where you can vote for us- make sure to specify “CrossFit Coeur d’Alene”, not just “crossfit”.
While your at it, vote for your fellow CrossFitters and help out their businesses! As mentioned above, Derek and Christina own the Lucky Monkey Trading Co. downtown- you can vote for them on page 4, under “Best Clothing Store” and “Best Jewelry”. Some other local businesses and people that have ties to CrossFit Cd’A: Mountain West Bank (Kmarc, Stein, Toni), H.I.P (salon-April is a stylist there). I am sure I am forgetting some, so post any suggestions to the comments section.
Hopefully everybody is having a great Christmas! We had a fun filled day at the box, graduating Boot camp Class 6, followed by the gym Christmas Party! Check out the newest batch of hard chargers below (when you see them next week, introduce yourself):

John, Carol, Kenny, Eve, Derek, Jonathan, Teri, Wendy.
The Christmas Party was a blast! Good food, good beer, and good company… all while trying not to get pelted by rubber balls! We had a kids league, all female league, and even a few games with left hand only (check out the video!) Here are a handful of pics from the festivities:

OK so if you read this post, you’re probably thinking, “What the heck do I do?”
Well, I don’t think it’s realistic to go to bed when it gets dark during the winter in N. Idaho… most people aren’t even home from work yet. But there are a few things the authors recommended:
Keep lights to a low level of intensity after dark.
Go to bed earlier, incrementally.
Wake up at dawn.
Blackout the room you sleep in; like, you can’t see your hand in front of your face dark. (I just ordered these curtains, so I’ll let you know how they work.)
Tape up any blinking lights, and toss the LED clock.
Try to get 9.5 hours of sleep during the winter.
Turn off the TV at 9 pm (and take it out of the bedroom).
If you have trouble falling asleep, read for 20 minutes.
Eat meat and green stuff, limiting processed carbs. Eat what is in season.
Eat real fats. Stay away from man made ones.
Stay away from over the counter sleep meds like melatonin. Melatonin is a hormone, and taking it will downregulate natural production.
They go on to say that 9.5 hours of sleep 7 months out of the year will probably wreak havoc on your social life, but so will diabetes and cancer. Something to ponder.
