Name: Tyler Alvarado
How long have you been doing crossfit?
I’ve been doing CrossFit for almost 4 years now.
What is your Athletic Background if any?
I have always been pretty active. Growing up I was really involved with wrestling and baseball as well as dabbling in football, basketball and soccer. I started skiing when I was 6 and switched to snowboarding about 9 years old. I raced mountain bikes (downhill and cross country) on a team for 3 years during my teenage years. I’ve always loved wakeboarding but didn’t have a boat in the family to go very often until recently.
How did you get started with Crossfit?
I was living in North Spokane and working in Coeur d’Alene so I was spending 2 hours driving and 8-10 hours/day working behind a desk. I was getting fat and not happy with my activity level. I had been hearing how great Crossfit was and saw the physique of crossfitters so I decided to sign up. I started at AKA Fit off of US-95 before they shut their box down.
What are some of your Hobbies outside Crossfit?
I love to spend time with my family. In the summers we spend a lot of time at our family lake cabin on Loon Lake (North of Deer Park, WA). We like to wakesurf and hang out on our boat on Coeur d’Alene Lake as well. I enjoy hunting, fishing, shooting guns, snowboarding, dirt bike riding, volleyball, softball and watching movies.
What are 3 things we at Crossfit don’t know about you?
- I’m a big little kid! (Okay, so maybe you know this about me)
- I broke my neck when I was 16 on my downhill bike. However, I wasn’t racing…I was showing how big of balls I had with my brothers and friends and bam! I have video evidence of the accident which is funny to watch now that I’ve fully recovered.
- I have a big family and extended family…on both my side and my wife’s side. It’s pretty fun!
What’s your favorite thing about our Box?
The coaching staff is amazing and I love how there are so many knowledgeable and caring coaches. Every other gym I’ve been to, there have only been 1 or 2 coaches. Over time, when the job of running a box catches up with them, they can get tired and burnout. With having so many great coaches to share the burden, it’s great to see the passion in all the coaches even having been at it this long. And I feel like they truly care. Thank you to all coaches of Coeur d’Alene Crossfit and to Derek/Johnathan who have intentionally set it up that way.
I also love all the members. Our community is an amazing group of people and I love getting to know everyone and smashing workouts with my 6:00 AM crew. Lastly, I love the building and location. The building is old and super unique which I love. How cool is the location being only 4ish blocks up from the lake. I hate running but I hate it a little less since we’re running outside in cool downtown CDA. I do recommend we change our “normal running course” to head toward the lake this next Spring/Summer/Fall rather than away from the lake. We’ll just have to deal with the stoplights but a change in scenery would be fun ☺!
What other boxes have you been too?
I started at AKA fit. I switched to 509 Crossfit in North Spokane in June of 2014. In March of 2015 I switched to Crossfit Rewired in North Spokane. In March of 2016 I switched to Coeur d’Alene CrossFit. I have also dropped in at several gyms when traveling including Crossfit Poipu (Kauai), CrossFit Gulch (Nashville), and several others I can’t think of right now.
