February 3, 2016 blog

You can’t miss her big smile, energetic and positive attitude and of course, those abs..hehe.  She rarely misses a day at the gym, works hard and never takes life too seriously! We love that she is always so quick to give someone a high five with a big smile. Thanks for being a part of the Tribe Gena, we are so grateful to have you at CFCDA!

How long have you been doing crossfit?

This month marks my 3-year anniversary for Crossfit.
What is your Athletic Background if any?

I grew up in Bend, Oregon moving irrigation pipes, hauling hay, choppin wood, mowing lawns & tending to the horses during the workweek. During the summer weekends my family water skied & winter weekends we downhill skied Mt. Bachelor. My high school sports included track & volleyball. Dad always taught us work before play.

How did you get started with Crossfit?

I’d never heard of Crossfit before Sue O’Dell & Warren Ela had recommended I try it.
Once I gained the courage, I stepped through the door while a class was in full WOD. The coach approached me to ask how he could help. I (word for word) replied, “I want to stop saggin’, baggin’ & draggin’.” In that instant, a warm reassuring ear-to-ear smile formed on his face as he responded, “You’re in the right place.”

I watched as the class finished, all the while admiring the strong men & women playing on the “monkey bars”, better known as the Pull-up Rig. I wanted to play too! The coach encouraged me, “Give it 30-days & you’ll be hooked.” I signed up myself for one month to attend 3-days per week. I attended each class. At the start of my second month, I signed up for Unlimited Classes & attended everyday the gym was open. At the three month point, my body (& mind) figured out this was its new “norm” & began to respond well to its new found love. I also began attending the lifting, yoga & skill’s classes. I was attending to the need of my body & mind. My body & mind was attending to me.

Not only has Crossfit yielded physical & mental benefits, the most unexpected joys have come from Crossfit. I’ve met the most positive, like-minded, supportive & encouraging community I’ve ever met in my life. This magnificent community is not limited to my local box, I believe it’s worldwide for every gym I’ve visited I’ve received the same welcoming energy.
What are some of your Hobbies outside Crossfit?

Outdoor Crossfit is great! Outdoor anything is where I belong! My passion is water skiing. I also love snowmobiling, downhill skiing, ATV’ing, biking, hiking, kayaking, paddleboarding, swimming, travel, reading, games & laughing with family & friends around a campfire, dinner table or hacky sack.

What are 3 things we at Crossfit don’t know about you?

I’m a HUGE Survivor fan!

I used to ride a GSXR1100 and during one of my speed runs down Mt Bachelor I reached 152 mph (that’s the thrill seeker in me 🙂

My very first WOD was “Jackie” on January 11th, 2013.
For Time: 1000m row
50 Thrusters @ 45#
30 Pull-Ups
My time was 12:12 (assisted with a green band). I’ve never done Jackie since although I would love to!

What’s your favorite thing about our Box?

Wait, just one?
I am smitten with the members of Crossfit Coeur d’Alene. This community is genuinely fun, hard working & motivated to improve their long term health. They have it all goin’ on! I am honored to be a part of their fitness hour aka., adult recess! The coaches are superior in their knowledge of movement standards, attentive to our individual needs, energetic & passionate about their profession. Lastly, the program offered for our teens & kids is fantastic. My 14 year old son is thriving along side his friends! What a blessing.

What other boxes have you been too?

Crossfit 480, Oregon Crossfit, Crossfit Thrice, Crossfit Spokane, Crossfit Spokane Valley, Wildland Crossfit, Crossfit Hayden & Post Falls Crossfit Lotus Crossfit (formerly)
Any other comments

Crossfit brings out the best in people.

I had less than two months of experience when I signed up for my first Crossfit Open. It’s so cool to see what you’re capable of during the Open & where your fitness ranks amongst your gender, age, region as well as the best athletes in the world. I learned I was capable of more than what I thought I was capable of. The effect of the Open gave me confidence. The confidence gave me energy. I encourage everyone to sign up. We’ll do 5 fun workouts with the rest of the world. Crossfit <3
