Coaches

Our head coaches at CrossFit Coeur d’Alene are co-owners Derek Hutchison and Jonathan Burns. Though they may look alike, their distinct athletic backgrounds and interests combine to offer our athletes broad, expert coaching simply not found at any other gym.

Derek Hutchison

While four years as a Recon Marine brought Derek some great skills, it was his time as an instructor to aspiring Recon Marines that created a desire to teach what he had learned to others. Derek has been coaching since 2005, and has a great desire to learn about and teach all aspects of strength, gymnastics, nutrition, programming, and recovery. He is a CrossFit Certified Trainer and USA Weightlifting Sports Performance Coach, and has attended numerous certifications and seminars to include the CrossFit Olympic Weightlifting Certification, CrossFit Endurance Certification, CrossFit Nutrition Certification, CrossFit Movement and Mobility Certification, and CrossFit Gymnastics Certification. Derek is also currently pursuing his B.S. in Exercise Science at American Military University.

Jonathan Burns

Jonathan’s background in elite sport (rowing) not only provided him an avenue to test the limits of his body, it also sparked an interest in human performance that continues to this day. Jonathan has been coaching since 2004, and considers himself a student of exercise physiology. As such, he quickly realized that CrossFit’s broad, general, inclusive methods are an ideal program for all athletes, from the everyday to the elite. In addition to being a CrossFit certified trainer, Jonathon has attended the CrossFit Olympic Weightlifting Certification, CrossFit Endurance Certification, CrossFit Movement and Mobility Certification, and CrossFit Gymnastics Certification. Like Derek, he has and will continue to further his knowledge by any means possible.

Jonathan and Derek carefully plan every day at CrossFit Coeur d’Alene. They respect the fact that our athletes work hard to achieve their goals, and each one-hour session is prepared accordingly.

Trainers at Large:
Meagan Mylan

Meagan’s 8 years spent as a sprinter has helped her develop immensely as a coach and athlete. Her interest in sports, fitness and the biomechanics of the human body lead her to get a degree in Sports Science and is always interested in learning new things about exercise and nutrition. She loves to try new sports and explore different areas of fitness. She is Crossfit certified and has been coaching athletes in track and field and Crossfit since 2008. She is currently looking into furthering her education in the Health Sciences field.

Mandy Jacques

Mandy has always led a very active lifestyle highlighted by her collegiate basketball experience; she is an Ironman Cd’A finisher, and a lifelong athlete. Mandy is the only firefighter/paramedic for the Coeur d’Alene fire department. Mandy has been a CDAFD peer fitness coach for 6 years and has incorporated CrossFit into the department’s fitness program. Mandy is a CrossFit Certified Trainer and excited to share her fitness knowledge, passion for CrossFit, and helpful nature with the athletes at CrossFit CdA.

Camille Carleton

After spending the better part of her life as an elite soccer athlete as well as being active in winter sports, tennis and swimming, Camille found herself in the worst shape of her life after four years of poor nutrition knowledge and lack of exercise in college. After college her health only further deteriorated with her cross-country traveling career. After three years at Crossfit CDA, today, Camille is a stronger athlete than ever before and preaches the importance of nutrition knowledge and exercise even with her hectic traveling career. Camille is a CrossFit Certified trainer, and having experienced over two dozen CrossFit gyms nationwide on her travels she brings an array of knowledge and experience from each gym.

Katie Zieglar

Katie’s passion for fitness dates back to her college years as a three-sport athlete. Like many, she fell out of her fitness groove after college and wasn’t satisfied with her lifestyle. It wasn’t until she discovered CrossFit Coeur d’Alene that her understanding of “being fit” was bigger than just college sports. Katie first joined Crossfit Coeur d’Alene in August of 2010, after several years of personal training at a traditional gym. With her background in gymnastics, volleyball, and sprints, Katie rose quickly through the ranks at CFCd’A, obtaining her level one certification 8 months after joining. She loves how CrossFit has enabled her to expand on her active lifestyle and takes great pleasure in helping others achieve their fitness goals.

Trent Breakie

Spending most of his adult life living an unhealthy, fast-food and beer lifestyle, Trent first walked into CrossFit Cda at 300 pounds, ready for a change. Right away, he was hooked by the demanding, fun workouts and knew CrossFit was something he could stick with for a lifetime. He committed himself to a lifestyle transformation, focusing on quality food, good sleep, and of course, consistent CrossFit! After losing a total of 80 pounds within the first 6 months of his membership and totally reshaping his life from the ground up, Trent set his sights on becoming a top athlete at the gym, and shareing his love of CrossFit with other athletes looking to see the same success that he did. Now, at 3 years later, he is a Level 1 Certified Trainer and loves teaching what he has learned about the sport of fitness to the people who walk through the doors of CrossFit Coeur d’Alene.
