A Q&A with our newest coach, Janet Durant!

Tribe! We are super excited to have a new Coach joining the ranks at CFCDA: Janet Durant! Many of you have already met her, as she has been around shadowing classes every now and again for the last 6 weeks or so- for those of you who haven’t, here is a little Q&A we did with her to give you a bit of background:
Tell us a bit about your athletic background?
My mom put me in gymnastics at 2 years old to make good use of my excessive energy. I qualified to Western Nationals at 15 years old and remained in the sport until I was 20 years old. I also did swim & dive in high school. I won districts and took 4th at State my senior year in diving.

When/where did you get started with CrossFit? 

I began CrossFit in September 2010 at the Yakima YMCA.

When did you begin coaching? 

I knew right away that I really liked CrossFit and got my Level 1 Certification in January of 2011, less than 6 months into my CrossFit journey. I began subbing classes in January and took on a consistent schedule that summer at the Yakima YMCA CrossFit Affiliate’s program.

What is your favorite aspect of being a CrossFit coach?

I love the community aspect that this sport provides and love seeing new people become a part it. I love seeing the progress over time for athletes; as far as physical body composition, physical capabilities and learning new skills but even more so, I love seeing the true personality of an individual come out as they become more comfortable being amongst other likeminded people.

What is your favorite CF movement? Workout? 

I love all movements but particularly enjoy the more complex skills such as the snatch and muscle ups. I don’t think I can name a favorite WOD, I love being challenged in whatever is thrown at me on a daily basis.

What are your goals as a coach coming to CFCDA? 

I hope to continue to learn more in this sport to help others grow as athletes and as people. I too, hope to grow as a person, coach, athlete and student at CrossFit Coeur D’Alene.

Favorite food? Favorite music? Movie? What do you do with your spare time? 

Sushi!
I thrive on alternative, 90’s pop, Lana Del Rey as my music choices.
I love artsy, dark films.
In my free time I enjoy cooking paleo concoctions and walking my disabled dog in his wagon. On occasion, I also like to visit Gymnastics Gym’s to work on skills I was learning prior to leaving the sport.

If you haven’t met Janet yet, she’ll be around all week- just check the schedule, and come say hi! We’re certain that all the athletes at CFCDA will benefit from her experience, both as an athlete and a coach- not only was she a top athlete in the Northwest region this year, but she has been a CrossFit coach for nearly 5 years: we are positive that she will be a phenomenal addition to your coaching staff!
