How Much CrossFit Do You Need?
So, how often do you come to CrossFit? Every now and again? Twice a week? Five or six times a week?
How about this question: how often should you come to CrossFit? Answer: that depends on you!
Though it may seem random, there is actually a method to the programming: throughout the week, the daily WOD is designed to accomodate an athlete that wishes to workout almost every day. Does this mean that everyone should be in the gym every day? Absolutely not! Athletes fresh out of boot, or those still working into full range of motion should take their time. Three days a week is plenty, especially for those busy with other forms of excercise.
Listen to your body. Proper rest is just as important to being fit as nutrition and gym time is! Just as not enough gym time will ensure that every time you DO make it in you get sore, too much time can have the same effect, and lead to injury.
Believe me when I say that I love seeing everyone psyched about CrossFit and really pushing hard, just as I hate to see you guys come to practice tired, a bit beat up, and leave worse off. At best, overtraining will lead to a stagnation in improvement, at worst it leads to burnout and injury (your bodies’ way of forcing you to rest). Remember, the WOD is a heavy dose of excercise: just a little bit goes a long way.
Can your body handle a heavy training load? Maybe yes, maybe no! Eventually, through diligence on your part and smart programming on our part, all of you will be able to handle more work than you could to begin with. Train hard, train smart, don’t hesitate to ask questions if you are unsure of what to do. That’s what we are here for!
